WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY CELEBRATION
In the year of 2008 Apikri celebrate ‘ World Fair Trade Day “ with the theme of Fair Trade and Ecology by arranging some programs among other things : Green Party at the Annual General Meeting, Fair Trade Campaign at Pusat Studi Pariwisata UGM ( Tourism Study Center ) Gajah Mada University, Fair Trade Campaign at Social Politic Faculty Gajah Mada University, Fair Trade in Ideality and Reality for Apikri producers, Pandanus replanting in Congot sea Kulon Progo, Workshop “ Fair Trade and Ecology : Increasing the welfare of society and environment through pandan plant “, Replanting of trees at Non productive land at Jati Sawit village, Sleman. FAIR TRADE CAMPAIGN ON TELEVISION PROGRAM
On May 15th 2008 Apikri arranged fair trade campaign on Television Program with TVRI Stasion. Mr. Amir Panzuri who become the speaker at this program together with other speakers from other institutions: Agriculture and Education. The audience was consisting of Apikri producers, staff from government institution, students. Also for all the people who saw the program. Besides talking about Apikri running, Mr. Amir also introduce about fair trade and its principles to the audience. At the questions time , Mr. Amir told about the fair trade program held by Apikri in this year . Including it was Pandan Replanting at Congot Sea , Kulon Progo. In this program some products made by Apikri producers were displayed at the room where the program run.
In this opportunity also one of Apikri producer had a chance to tell about his business. Mr. Cipto (leather producer of Apikri ) gave a short explanation about his business running and the support from Apikri in assisting Mr. Cipto. As an amusement, there was a traditional dance and traditional songs after the each discussion.
The program run well with good result because fair trade can be spread wider not only for Apikri producers , the audience but also for all people who saw this program. They are proud with fair trade as ethical way in doing trading. Hope that this ethical can be followed by other traders.
FAIR TRADE CAMPAIGN AT GAJAH MADA UNIVERSITY : FAIR TRADE AND TOURISM
For the third program Apikri held fair trade campaign with the theme: Fair Trade as a point of view to answer the unfair business. This program held at Tourism Study Center Gajah Mada University Yogyakarta on 21 May 2008. Mr. Amir Panzuri was a quest lecture in this program which attended by students from TULUS France ( 5 students ), and others students from Tourism UGM . The total participanst were 50 students. The main content of this lecture that explained by Mr. Amir Panzuri ( Apikri Director ) was about Fair Trade and Tourism. Including in this case was ecology which is caused by tourism activities. Cottage at the sea surrounding that do not care with environment, garbage wasting. This needed the policy from government which is comprehensive, united for the tourism activities. Although tourism can give the country devisas, but if there is no unified rule, it will destroy the environment, morality. The owner of capital will take the benefit but not small community. Small Community only got an impact.
FAIR TRADE CAMPAIGN AT GAJAH MADA UNIVERSITY:
FAIR TRADE and ECOLOGY AND ITS IMPACT TO THE ENVIRONMENT.
The fourth program for celebrating world fair trade day this year is fair trade campaign held at Politic and Social Faculty of Gajah Mada University. The campaign held on 23 May 2008 which Apikri was a quest lecture. The aim of this campaign is give point of view to Politic and Social Dept. students about fair trade. To give idea for Politic and Social Department students regarding fair trade as one of subjects in this Department. In front of 100 students of Politic and Social Departement of Gajah Mada University Mr. Amir Panzuri as a quest lecture introduced about fair trade concept. The students were very anxious to deep more about fair trade. As the follow up of this campaign students have an idea about replanting tress at unproductive land in Jati Sawit village, Sleman. Apikri is as a donation for trees to plant in that area. It held on 17 June 2008. Besides that also one of lectures in Politic and Social Department will propose fair trade as one of choice subjects for the students in this Department. This idea still discussed at the level of Rector.
WORKSHOP FOR APIKRI PRODUCERS: FAIR TRADE IS IN IDEALLY AND REALLY.
As the fifth program for world fair trade day in this year Apikri arranged workshop for Apikri producers with the topic: Fair trade in ideally and really. It was held on 27 May 2008 attended by 50 producers with any kind material who have got an order from Apikri. The purpose of this workshop was to increase the fair trade awareness for Apikri producers and how far producers implemented the fair trade principles, the obstacle / problems faced by producers in implementing fair trade principles. In this workshop firstly, was a presentation from Apikri Director that explained about what is fair trade, why fair trade must be done, fair trade principles. Then group discussion where the producers divided into 5 groups, each group consists of 10 producers. In this discussion, each group discussed about how far the producers implement fair trade principles and obstacle in implementing the fair trade principles. As the result of this workshop was there is a summary noted by Apikri about the fair trade implantation in producers and its obstacle. The note was at the many conditions, order through fair trade partnership does not continue as long the production year. Or the order does not guarantee the production process activity avaliable a long the year. In this matter the producers or fair trade supplier organization can not stop the work relation with the workers. For covering that lack, there are producers forced receive the prder comes from business convensional compay. The impact is, the producers can not keep the work relation which meet the fair trade ethical, especialy in the matter of price. Therefore, a business relation with fair trade organization must run a long a year. So, the fair trade practise will be the business manner that is always kept and continued together by fair trade organization and fair trade producer. a long a year. Then this note has been proposed to IFAT for consideration.
REPLANTING OF PANDAN PLANT AT CONGOT SEA, KULON PROGO
The sixth program of world fair trade day this year was replanting of pandan plants at Congot Sea, Kulon Progo. It was held on 29 May 2008 . This replanting held in the cooperation between Apikri and Region Government of Kulon Progro. Participated by some pandan handicraft producers in Kulon Progra, Apikri producers, Region Government of Kulon Progo ( Head, and staff ). Pandanus is one of fibers material for making handicraft likes: mats, bags, place mates, purse, coin holder, and others. It is a kind of grass that grows at at Side Sea, plateau, mountainous for handicraft material and for holding up the land. To make more pandan plant, it can grow by its stem . The need of pandan plants increasing, but the source of material is not enough. Pandan besides for making handicraft this plans also can be wind barrier, holding up the land. Apikri try to give point of view to the community about the benefits of pandan plants by pandan replanting.
At this day Apikri planted pandan with symbolic. The real replanting will be on rainy season this year (around November). Apikri would like to give 5000 pcs pandan plants that can be planted at the area of km2. This purpose is to motivate the pandan farmer and people in this area to plant the pandan because pandan have many benefit not only for handicraft material but also for environment conservation.
After symbolic pandan planting, continued with short discussion between Apikri and regional government head and staff at the side of the sea. The discussion started with the short explanation about Apikri, fair trade, fair trade principle and replanting program. For next continued with questions and answers. The replanting program finished at 13.00 pm. The participants of Apikri consist of Boards, Executive, and Producers back to the office by bus.
WORKSHOP: FAIR TRADE AND ECOLOGY, INCREASING COMMUNITY WELFARE AND ENVIRONMENT THROUGH PANDAN PLANT
This workshop was as seventh programe held by Apikri in celebrating the world fair trade day this year. Workshop which took a place a “Gedung Kaca” Building Kulon Progo Regency held on 2 June 2008 with the theme “ Increasing Community Welfare and Environment thorough Pandan Plant “. It was attended by 100 participants who consist of pandan producers at Kulon Progo Regency, , Apikri producers, Apikri staff and also some personell from Government Regional of Kulon Progo. In this workshop there were 3 speakers: Apikri, Trade and Industry Department of Kulon Progo, Regional Government of Kulon Progo. The speaker from Regional Government of Kulon Progo presented about the policy from government regarding the development of agriculture,plantation tourism of Kulon Progo . It was presented also about program of development from Kulon Progo Government including increasing the welfare of farmer, marketing model, local economy increasing. The speaker from Trade and Industry Department explained about the development of pandan and other fibers products marketing, potency of pandan and other fibers craft, the effort to promote pandan craft, increasing skill for producers. The speaker from Apikri (Mr. Amir Panzuri ) presented about Apikri, fair trade, fair trade principle, pandan craft market, opportunity of pandan craft market for export
After all the speakers presented with each subject , then the participants had time to have questions regarding the subjet that presented by the speaker. As the conclusion of the workshop : the market opportunity for pandan craft is good, the producers should be ready for meeting of pandan craft need, the farmers of pandan have good opportunity for supply the need of pandan.
There were 7 participant who asked questions who consist of pandan farmers, craft producers, and the staff of government department. From the questions which were asked by the participants, each speaker concerns with the subject gave an answer. The questions from participants among other things regarding: the follow up of the workshop, the need of pandan plants for fiber producers, replanting of pandan, the pandan quality, how to be producer of Apikri, the success story from Apikri producer. As the requirement of participants, Apikri producer (Mr. Cipto Wiyono ) who become a producer of leather told about his success in running his business. Mr. Cipto told that for the first he was a becak driver. His life was so hard at that moment. When he changed his work to be leather producer then he is now living with welfare life. But, of course strong motivation, do not desperate, honest, simple life, active to catch the market opportunity, willing in skill increasing make him to be successful leather producer At the end of workshop Apikri and government regional of Kulon Progo make workshop follow up with assistance for farmer producers in planting pandan till harvest the pandan.
REPLANTING OF JATI AND MAHAGONI WOOD AT JATI SAWIT VILLAGE, SLEMAN
As the end of world fair trade program run by Apikri this year was “ Replanting of jati and mahagoni trees at Jati Sawit Village, Sleman. This replanting program was as the cooperation program between Apikri and Gajah Mada University, Faculty Politic and Social. It was held on June 2, 2008 with the participant 6 students of Politic and Social Faculty of Gajah Mada University, 2 Boards of Apikri, 4 Apikri staffs. Some people who live in Jati Sawit village.
In this replanting, Apikri gave 5000 tress of jati and mahagoni to the people in Jati Sawit Village. As the organizer of the program were students of Politic and Social Faculty of Gajah Mada University. Who consist of 6 students. In this opportunity, Mr. Lejar ( Head of Apikri board ) introduced to the people about Apikri and its activities, then Mrs. Athi Munzilah ( Head of Community Development ) explained about the benefits of planting jati and mahagoni tress in this area and also fair trade . For the information, this area is unfertile area. So replanting becomes very important to prevent the land from erosion. Jati and mahagoni is kind of wood tress that are suitable planted in this area, since the other wood trees ( sengon , pule ) need to grow in fertile area .
At the end of program was planting jati and mahagoni tree at the land of people at Jati Sawit village done by Jati Sawit people as symbolic. Because this dry season is not good for planting tree. The actual planting will be done in November – December when the season will be wet season.
COMPARATIVE STUDY AT APIKRI
On 10 July 2008, Trade and Industry Department of West Java visited Apikri to know about Apikri both for trading and technical assistance for producers. There were around 30 people from Trade and Industry Department of West Java who joined in this comparative study. After a lot discussion at Apikri office with Mr. Amir Panzuri ( Apikri director ) and Head Divisions, then they visited Apikri showroom to see some items made by Apikri producers, also seeing product development items in the room. After visiting Apikri , they visited batik producer of Apikri who used natural dye color for batik coloring. Some of them are interested in learning how to apply natural dye on batik for the next.
On 11 July 2008, around 35 producers from Java visited Apikri to learn about how Apikri trade the handicraft items and how Apikri assist the producers. They are leaded by the Gresik Cement Company of East Java who also concerns with the development of small handicraft producers. They are mostly handicraft producers with any kind of material: textile, leather, natural. They pay attention a lot during the discussion especially in finding market access and product development, marketing strategy. They said that this kind of comparative study make them know more about product and market. Some of them would like to send sample to Apikri to have market access facilitation from Apikri.
On 12 July 2008, young people assisted by Transmigration and Labour Department of Yogyakarta , visited to Apikri to know more about what is Apikri done . This visit is becoming a part of their lesson in joining the entrepreneurship traning held by Transmigration and Labor Department of Yogyakarta. They have not started with the business, but in this case Apikri gave motivation to them to start the business, how run the business, business problem, marketing, and product. In this comparative study there were around 45 young people who joined in this program.
NICHOLAS SAILARD (SIGNALETHIQUE-FRANCE)
On 20-21 August 2008 our new buyer Signalethique from France visited to Apikri. The visit of Nicholas (Director of Signalethique ) was to see the further cooperation with Apikri in fair trade ethical also seeing the producers who are making the products of Nicholas order. For the first day, Nicholas discussed with management personnel regarding his business, fair trade, social project, further cooperation with Apikri and also explanation about marketing strategy. For the next was product development review . Nicholas asked Apikri to makes samples base on the new items showed by Apikri. At the last activity of this day was visiting to 3 of wood producers who live in Gunung Kidul and 1 coiling bamboo in Gunung Kidul also. At the place of 3 wood producers Nicholas made a video for promotion media by interview with the producer and Amir ( Apikri Director ), documentation of production process and environment in the villages. The 3 wood producer ( Kemiran,Tukiran, Wagimin ) are at the production process of Nicholas order. At this area in 2005 Apikri had a replanting program of sengon wood, we all visited to the field where producers planted the sengon tress that given by Apikri in 2005. The tress is now 3 years old, growing wll, healthy. For bamboo producer ( Tukijo ) who make items from coiling bamboo , Nicholas seeing the products stock and make short discussion with producer and Apikri. Nicholas visited to bamboo producer because he is interested in the coiling items, although at this time he has not placed an order for these items. At the second day, Nicholas visited the producer of print laser, candle holder, natural dye batik, and recycled paper. Similar with the first day,. Nicholas took a documentation of the producers: production process, interview, and environment of producers. The producers, who were visited in this day all had done the order from Nicholas, except natural dye batik on textile and recycled paper. For the future, he expects to give order for the natural dye batik and recycled paper also because the materials are friendly. Thanks Nicholas….
JOHN HAYDEN (JAMTOWN – USA) VISIT
On the date o 19 – 20 July 2008, John Hayden our buyer from USA which special with music instrument visited Apikri. John would like to see the production process of rebana which he orders at that time. Besides also he wanted to find new product development especially for music instrument from Indonesia. For the first day, he discussed at Apikri about his company running, music instrument products, promotion way. Apikri also shared about the program of running both for trading and community development. The next continued with the sample selection for music instrument new design. John asked to make some samples for Indonesia music instrument. At the first visit John went to producer of batik ( Siwi ) who live near with Apikri office. We took some times to see the production process of batik on rebana, besides also had interview with Siwi and the workers. It was nice discussion because besides told about her business Siwi also sang a song since she is also a singer besides as batik producers. At the second day John and Apikri visited to wood producers , but in this work he makes instrument music of maracas. The unique design of this music instrument is this item made of rubber seeds, nice sound. But Dartono also make gamelan in small size for promoting to Jamtown. Dartono asked to make some samples also. After this visiting, then continued to visit of the other batik producers namely John Roospriyanto. He made some motif batik on rebana that Jamtown ordered. Then the meeting with the rebana producer held at Apikri office. After discussion with John Roos, Jamtown asked John to make some design motif on rebana. The last, activity of this visit was discussion again about the cooperation business between Apikri and Jamtown.
ESQ TRAINING
Every month, Apikri (Boards, executive) and producers had ESQ training. The training purpose is to build their spirit mentality for running the business, how to achieve more sales, attention to environment, benefits for the society, good character, welfare, safe. The number of participants was around 40 persons who consist of executive, boards, and producers. For the speaker Apikri invited outside resource person who were capable about this kind of training. The method of training: presentation from the speaker, question and answer as the last session. All the participants of the training are usually happy with this training because they can take many benefits from lesson that they got for improving their life both for physically and mentality.
MARKETING PLANNING MENTORING FROM ASIA FAIR TRADE FORUM
On 24 – 28 July 2008 Consultant of Marketing (Carina) and Design Product Consultant ( Budji Trevaless ) from Asia Fair Trade Forum through Asia Fair Trade for Learning came to Apikri to conduct Marketing Planning Mentoring. This program is a part of Integrated Design and Marketing, a follow up to the Marketing Planning Workshop held on 21 – 15 April in Yogyakarta . The purpose of the both Consultants visit was to assist Apikri for Development Apikri Marketing Plan. Apikri took benefits from the Consultancy especially for helping Apikri to make business plan. In this consultancy, Apikri also took the opportunity to train producers to increase their skill of product development. Budji as a design product Consultant trained producers with basic design, design information for 2 hours. The producers who participated in the training were around 25 producers with any kind of materials.
MONTHLY MEETING HELD FOR BOARDS, STAFF, PRODUCERS
Apikri arranges a monthly meeting with producers, Board, staff. Firstly , monthly meeting just arisan meeting. This arisan meeting purpose for the first was for overcome the money problem after the earthquake attack 2006. The fund was from Apikri with the total Rp. 90.000.000 This fund lent by producers, boards, staff for recovering after the earthquake. Then they pay back everymonth by meeting of Arisan. This name of Arisan is Agem ( Arisan Gempa / Earthquake Arisan ).
Further the meeting not only “Arisan” but since May 2008 this meeting also for sharing any information from Apikri : program of Apikri in a month, design product trend information, market information. In this meeting producers also took this opportunity to ask many questions regarding any problems faced by them.
For information the monthly arisan meeting held for the first held on August 2006 with participants of 60 persons.
COMPARATIVE STUDY OF WOOD PRODUCERS TO BOJONEGORO ,EAST JAVA
On 25 th August 2008 there were 39 wood producers consist of wood producer Damangcraft group Dlingo and others individual wood producers from other regions had comparative study at the wood producers group in Bojonegoro , East Java. This program is a part of cooperation program of Apikri – Caritas Switzerland for recovering wood producer group in Dlingo, Bantul after earthquake attack in 2006.
The subject learning of comparative study as follows: production tool, production tool function, material (price, the sources), production capacity, price. The most benefits from this comparative study was the producers know how to make efficiency of production process so that the price will be competitive with the good product quality, simple production tool, less working hour, high motivation, easy material sources. The participants besides wood producers, including also staff of Apikri and personnel from Caritas Switzerland.
There were 6 producers in the Pasiraman region who become the places for comparative study. Pasiraman is well known the high bubut wood quality, reasonable price, eventhough the products only have local market and selling in the showroom. They still need a lot about market information.
