On September 23, 2025, Apikri participated in an international training session on wage structures, costing, and product pricing organized by TTV USA. The training, conducted via Zoom from 19:00 to 21:30 WIB, was led by Lauren Barkume, a global expert on artisan business development. Apikri was represented by three staff members and one board member, joining 51 participants from different countries who were equally enthusiastic throughout the session.
The session focused on the critical role of fair wages and accurate product pricing in sustaining artisan businesses. Barkume emphasized that costing and pricing are both an art and a science, requiring careful calculation of materials, labor, and overheads. She explained how determining a fair living wage for artisans is not only a matter of financial sustainability but also of ethical responsibility, ensuring that artisans’ livelihoods are protected while businesses remain competitive.
Participants were introduced to various pricing structures, including Ex-Factory, FOB, CIF, wholesale, and retail pricing. Barkume explained how each stage of the distribution chain adds costs, which need to be considered carefully to balance profitability and affordability. She also highlighted common challenges in pricing, such as competition, market demand, and distribution channels, and shared strategies for adjusting prices without undermining product value.
Interactivity was a highlight of the session, as participants actively engaged through chat discussions and real-time questions. The enthusiasm from attendees across different countries created a vibrant exchange of knowledge and experiences. Apikri representatives gained valuable insights on aligning product pricing with international standards while staying true to their mission of supporting artisans.
By joining this training, Apikri strengthened its understanding of wage structures and product costing, which are essential for competing in the global marketplace. The cooperative reaffirmed its commitment to ethical trade, ensuring that artisans receive fair payment while their products reach customers worldwide at prices that reflect both value and sustainability.
